No Limits Supported Employment Success Stories part. 1
We work with businesses and individuals to provide supported employment opportunities across Devon. We ascribe to the social model of disability and provide support with training, advice, practical, and peer support. As a disability confident leader, we help other businesses become disability confident too.
Our aim is to increase the percentage of adults with different abilities entering the paid workforce.
Here we share our first success story- Hannah who is 29 years old:
Hannah originally had an 8- week work experience placement here at No Limits in the summer of 2022 and in the months that followed would visit the café regularly and stayed in contact through our monthly ‘Social Saturday’ sessions. These are arts and crafts based and it was soon evident that Hannah had a real passion and flare for all things creative.
In Spring 2023, Sarah Thorp our No Limits Supported Employment Lead approached the Director at Orchard Café and Crafts in Abbotskerswell just outside of Newton Abbot. Through employer engagement they were able to organise an 8-week work experience placement which included fully funded 1-2-1 support from a job coach.
During these 8 weeks, Hannah gained valuable skills in both the crafts part of the café and also in barista training and serving customers, etc. In addition, Sarah was also able to further support Hannah through our supported employment outreach that included extra transitions and travel training.
When her work experience placement finished, it led to an offer of a paid part time job for Hannah. She now works each weekend on a Saturday in the café, in an environment that is creative and nurturing and in which she has gained confidence in herself and valuable friendships.
