No Limits host free arts event for care experienced people in partnership with the Rees Foundation
On Thursday 21st September in partnership with the REES Foundation we hosted a pottery themed creative event for anyone with care experience who are over 16. The whole workshop was totally FREE, including all art materials, drinks and freshly made cakes by our kitchen team! The workshop was facilitated by our very own Sophy who is our in-house Rees Ambassador with extensive foster care experience herself, alongside Becky and Alice from the Rees Foundation.
We had several people in attendance with familiar faces from Devon County Council’s ‘Stand Up Speak Up’ Care Leavers Council and also members of Avocados Advocacy which is a local organisation supporting people with care experience, by people with care experience. We had a really varied age range of those attending, aged between 16 years and 50 years old! Testament to the fact that a workshop session such as this is accessible across the board. We even had a surprise visitor; Cathy who is the designated Nurse for Children in Care and Care Leavers. What was poignant about this was that Sophy and Cathy go back almost 20 years and used to work together many moons ago! You can tell by the last photo that they were very pleased to have the chance to catch up after all this time.
As a Rees affiliated Cafe, we at No Limits are extremely keen to support those in our local community and beyond who have care experience, whether that be foster care, supported living, kinship care, residential care and adoption, no matter how long ago. We are very proud that Rees chose our cafe space to deliver their pilot arts project.
We believe that creative expression can be instrumental in exploring identity and having your voice heard, as well as in the recovery process from trauma. It can also be great fun! We were thrilled to partner with the ‘Rees Foundation Arts Project’- which is an ever evolving and exciting project encouraging anyone with care experience to become involved.
